Technology – take it or leaf it

(English Follows)

Cyfle i fentro i fyd y dail. Yn lle brwydro yn erbyn technoleg, mi benderfynais gweld pa mor ddefnyddiol y gall defnydd o dechnoleg fod wrth geisio ddyfalu mathau amrywiol o goed. Prawf 1 oedd edrych ar goeden yn agos i’r fflat. Tynnu llun ar gyfer ap ‘Leafsnap UK’ (dwi’n siwr bod aps eraill ar gael) ac yna gweld y canlyniadau. 25 awgrym posib – ac yn eu plith y Gerddinen Wen. Mi roedd hyn yn creu rheswm i ddathlu – ac i boeni. Yn gynta’, dathliad pwer a phosibiliadau sy’n glwm wrth y wê. Yn ail, poeni wrth ystyried y tyfiant mawr sy’n disgwyl ein Gerddinen ni gartre. Jac a’r goeden gerddinen amdani!

Time to explore some leaves. Instead of battling technology, I decided to see how useful technology can be in trying to identify unknown trees. First test was to try and identify a tree near the flat. Taking a picture for the ‘Leaf Snap UK’ app was painless (I’m sure there are other tree identification apps available), and then all I had to do was assess the results. 25 possible tree suggestions were offered with clear images – and amongst them was the Whitebeam. (I hope this is a Whitebeam!). This was a cause for celebration and fear. Celebration regarding the potential of technology to help us understand our world. Fear because our little whitebeam sapling at home will one day be this big. Jack and the beanstalk it is then.
